Airflow falls because ventilatory effort falls. AASM classification expects no new snoring, inspiratory flattening, or thoracoabdominal paradox. A hypopnea also needs the airflow drop to last at least 10 seconds and be paired with oxygen desaturation or an arousal. AASM hypopnea criteria

A local airflow drop must pass the duration/depth thresholds and recur as part of at least three reasonably regular waxing/waning cycles. That narrows the field to wub-linked central-pattern candidates; it does not reveal respiratory effort, SpO₂, or EEG arousal.
Sessions separated by no more than three hours are grouped into one sleep period. The seven-day line is duration-weighted. WEI uses monitoring time—not EEG-confirmed sleep time—and is not AHI or cAHI.

A run needs three recurring troughs to qualify; once it does, each trough counts as its own event. Occupancy measures the run’s full elapsed time, so long stretches of sustained wobbling look appropriately less innocent.
